Clay Stories is a significant survey exhibition of contemporary artworks in ceramics that have been created by both highly established and emerging Indigenous artists in remote parts of regional Australia. The exhibition presents pieces that are both sculptural and vessel-based, with each body of work representative of the artist’s connection to Country and as a strong medium for story telling.
Sabbia Gallery have worked closely with the Ernabella Arts ceramics studio since 2011 and have held a number of highly successful and comprehensive exhibitions with many of their finest ceramic artists in that time. In conjunction with the Remote Communities Ceramic Network (RCCN) we are now pleased to be presenting this touring exhibition which will further demonstrate the innovative artwork being made in ceramics by the diverse group of artists from across Australia; Ernabella Arts in the APY Lands, Erub Arts in the Torres Strait, Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre in Far North Queensland, Hermannsburg Potters in the Central Desert and Tiwi Design on Bathurst Island.
Clay Stories will act as a launch pad to reinvigorate and expand the RCCN, which last exhibited together in 2011. This network will be essential in enabling a narrative between artists from these often isolated communities. The exhibition also provides another platform for expression for these artists and an opportunity to further develop their practice.
Clay Stories was launched at Sabbia Gallery in Sydney in March 2017 and the response was overwhelming. Following on from the success of the exhibition, the once fourteen now twenty two exhibiting artists have created a new body of work that will tour throughout regional Australia.
